Abstract

The article highlights one of the important directions of development of soil science in Ukraine during the first half of the 20th century, in particular the development of the basic principles and methods of complex analysis of large-scale soil maps for the compilation of district, regional and republican soil maps and agricultural land typology. Using the principles of scientific objectivity, historical authenticity, as well as actual historical methods (problemchronological, biographical, descriptive, etc.), it was found out that a significant contribution to the processing of the methodology of accounting and analysis of land resources in Ukraine belongs to the doctor of agricultural sciences, professor Vernander Natalia Borisovna. The disclosure of her scientific work for the development of domestic soil science and became the purpose of this publication. It was established that during 1930-1950 Professor N.B. Vernander led the expeditionary work on soil surveys in various regions of Ukraine. On the basis of the results of the research, ground maps with descriptive texts were created, but for a long time the soil scientists did not manage to carry out exhaustive accounting, and, accordingly, analysis of agricultural soils. Attempts of quantitative and qualitative accounting of land were carried out on the territory of Ukraine from the early 1930's. The accounting method was to compile explication of soils on maps of different scales, but the obtained data did not meet the demands of agricultural production in the absence of calculating the area of land, therefore the nature of land use and, in general, the rationality of the use of the land remained unclear. It was found out that for the first time the calculation of land for lands for the whole territory was made in 1947-1948 with the publication of a soil map of Ukraine, co-authored by N.B. Vernander The full inventory of the land fund of Ukraine was conducted in 1957-1961 on the basis of continuous large-scale
mapping reflecting all factors of the physical and geographical environment that affect the productivity of agricultural land.
