Abstract

The article describes the formation and development of the Physicochemical Society of Kharkiv University, established in the second half of the 19 th century, and analyzed its scientific and social-charitable activities (1872-1915). The methodological basis of the study consists of the principles of objectivity, systemicity and historicism that predetermine the study and generalization of information on the basis of a scientific-critical analysis of a complex of sources and literature. Due to the perseverance of the outstanding physicist-chemist of the 19th and early 20th centuries, M. M. Beketov, who was appointed professor at the Department of Chemistry at the Kharkiv University, in 1864 a physicochemical department was organized. Before M.M. Beketov coming chemistry was taught at the natural department of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics and had no independent significance. Paying great attention to the communication of the scientists, M.M. Beketov, together with some professors of the Kharkiv University, filed a petition for the establishment of the Society for the Study of Sciences with the medical and physico-chemical sections. Physicists and chemists M. Beketov united in one section under the name "physico-chemical". The physicochemical section of the company was headed by a chairman. In addition to the head, it included an assistant chairman, from two to four secretaries, a librarian and a treasurer. The section, later society, had its own library and its own funds, which consisted of membership fees and other revenues. The Society issued minutes of meetings and annexes to the minutes, which published the works of members of the society, as well as dissertations. The library was replenished through an exchange with other scientific societies, donations and acquisitions. Studying the experience of scientific societies is very important in the process of cultural and scientific changes in Ukraine. Scientific associations were created with the aim of solving both scientific problems and issues of educational, pedagogical and educational character. Analyzing the minutes of the meetings, we must say about three directions of activity of the physical and chemical society: scientific, social, social and practical.
