Magic ways of curing children’s evil eye in the population of Western Ukrainian borderland (based on fi eld research).

Abstract

This article analyzes main ways of diagnosing and curing the evil eye in the territory of Western Ukrainian borderland. The source base is the fi eld materials collected during the ethnological expedition research. The study identifi es the symptoms of the evil eye: insomnia, pallor, convulsions, yawning and crying. Magic ways of curing the evil eye depending on the methods of diagnosis are described. Given are different options, from the simplest to more complex, of providing treatment for the evil eye. The content of the main ways of curing: «sucking away», «wiping away», «blowing away», «licking away» and «measuring off» is shown. Described are features of the rites of «measuring water», «burning and dropping coal» and «burning fl ax». It is established that the main practices for diagnosing the evil eye were preparing water and cleaning the house; during diagnosing – dropping coal into the water and uttering incantations; during curing – washing the baby and fi nal removal of the disease by pouring water with coal. The role of the performers of the rites: «competent people», a healer and the child’s mother is described. Signifi cant attention is paid to regional specifi city of curing the evil eyes.
