The process of the development of toponymic research in Ukraine has its own history. In particular, toponymic studies have received the widest development since the middle of the 20th century, although the first attempts to comprehend the accumulated toponymic material date back to ancient times. Toponymy is a fairly valuable scientific and lore source. This is the actual history and folklore, recorded in the names of geographical objects. Toponymy is important in villages, because small settlements have a certain constancy in the population, which results in their own geographical names preserving their original name for a long time or undergoing minimal changes. Therefore, the object of study was one of these settlements – village Velyka Karatul of Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi district of the Kiev region, located 10 km. to the north-east of the district center. For toponymics, their specific research methods are characteristic. The main role is played by field studies, the collection of primary material, the identification of natural, historical and ethnographic features of a particular region, features that determine the originality of toponyms. Toponymics uses methods that are inherent in historical science, work with archival materials, analysis of written sources. The service of toponymy put methods that are inherent in geographical science cartographic, spatial-comparative, and others. The toponyms presented in our study provide some ideas about historical and cultural development of Velyka Karatul. The overwhelming majority of them were formed in the 19th and 20th centuries, but some have a much earlier origin. Unfortunately, not all microtoponims are preserved till our time. However, the study and preservation of existing toponyms should promote the spread of knowledge about the history of the native land among the local population.
