Abstract

There are many discussions around the problem of the operation of the water reservations. Hence there is a need to closely examine the evolution of adaptive logistics practices of the near Dniper population in relation to thresholds. They can be divided into limited use (downstream navigation and upstream navigation) and evasion (transportation carried alternate roundabout way). In Kyiv Rus the population couldn’t fully overcome all water rapids (Nenasytets was treated by the land, and transportation through other were made by the controversial way). Cossacks learned how to fl oat the ship without leaving the shore, used water meters, created a special organization of river pilots and is contradictory exercise of upstream navigation. Russian Empire continued to use the Cossacks pilots, but began to clear thresholds, build channels and transferred some part of the traffi c to rail line. Under Soviet rule the main efforts were aimed at a radical solution to the problem by fl ooding the Dnieper rapids.
